"Keeper John, I think I want a bay horse," William said. "With good, strong bones and a wise head. Perhaps one broken to saddle last year, which has had some experience already. I need one that I can rely on, and I want to be sensible."

"Now here's a bay. That's the color you want and he might suit you better," said John. Two intelligent ears pricked as the horse turned and shifted in his stall. --- A groom was just finishing brushing out his tail. With four white socks and a white stripe, he was the horse William had been dreaming about. "Oh, John," William said. "What's his name?"
"We call him Dargent," said the keeper "He came in the same lot as the gray. He is three and was quite a handful when he arrived. But he's better now, eh , Peter?" he asked of the groom.
"Yes, sir. He is the best horse we've got." replied Peter --- Williams eyes shone "Can I try him?"
"Get him ready, Peter," Keeper John demanded "If Master William likes him, he may take him back to the castle today."
It was as William turned to leave the barn that he caught sight of the tops of two ears in the stall at the end. They looked so like Sacramenta's ears that for a moment he thought Hal must have led her inside to be in the shade. "What's in there?" he asked. "Oh," said Keeper John " A fine little courser. Three years old. Actually he is your Sacramenta's last foal. H e had a bad beginning, poor fellow, and is proving difficult to train. Pity he is so small. He was bred to be a great horse, but can't quite make the size.

I particularly liked this passage because as a reader you can feel Williams excitement at being able to choose his own warhorse. William had waited for his father to give him permission to choose his warhorse. William sees this as a sign that his father believes he is grown up enough to train a warhorse for when he becomes a knight. William has always dreamed of owning a beautiful bay warhorse with a white stripe and four white socks, to rival Montlouis, his brother Gavin's horse. However, although Dargent is his dream horse, when he lays eyes on Hosanna he feels this is the horse for him. Hosanna is a small, liver red colored horse who proves to be a handful. William knows his father will expect him to choose Dargent but he feels that he can train Hosanna well enough to become a champion warhorse.

I agree, i can truly feel that William feels that he is finally old enough to choose his own horse, and he does not ask for permission. I also feel that William is also worried that Sir Thomas(his father) will not enjoy Hosanna, but William likes him and that is all that truly matters to him.

I also was going to do this passage because i thought it showed how William was growing and it was going to be his horse not Sir Thomas's or Gavin's. Plus, size isn't everything. A good horse has a good heart.

William feels that he is old enough to pick a horse, but that is a very tough decision to make as a horse is a lot of responsibility and if he makes the wrong choice, he will regret it. William, in fact, chooses Hosanna over the big white horse named Dargent, and I think that is a good decision as he felt like he needed to have one with heart, besides one with brawn over brains. William worries that his father will not like the horse he picked out, and he shouldn't have worried, as the story unfolds he will realize that more and more.

I think that William made the right choice of horse and that this one did grow to love him. However, it was very cruel of Gavin to ride the horse like that because for all he knows, he could've killed it! The whole time William was tending to the horse was really sad to read because sometimes William loses faith and starts believing that the horse won't live.

I agree that William feels he is old enough and responsible enough to choose his own warhorse. William is definitely old enough to choose his own horse as he did not have second thoughts about Hosanna. Even though Hosanna was small, William looked past that and trained him to become a fearsome warhorse.

William was smart to pick his horse not by size or how pretty it was but he followed his gut and it turned out to be a good choice. Keeper John was not sure about the horse but Will still was faithful in his decision. Even though the Hosanna was not big, Will trained Hosanna into a strong, determined horse.

I agree that William showed maturaty beyond his age when he picked Hosanna despite what he knew Keeper John and Sir Thomas would say. Regardless of the much teasing he endured after choosing Hosanna, he kept strong and trained him into the horse that ended up making his and Kamil's lives better.

I agree mostly with jacob, he followed his gut, not his dream or anybody else. This is defiantly a sign of William growing up, he goes with his gut and his decision, rather than going with the crowd. William was right in his choice, he came (relatively) unscathed from the war, but the crowd with the big warhorses mostly ended up dead, or a lot worse than when they started.

I beleve that there was some sort of conection between Hossana and William. When William was choosing his horse he looked at a lot of different horses. Then he chose one and two little ears popped up and caught his atention. Keeper John told William that even he tried to ride the horse but the horse just kept bucking him off. William asked for the horse's name and Keeper John told him Hossana.
