The Death of Polly. (page 13)
  • ' She sewed by candlelight after dinner.' And then she collapsed. I released the handle and the bucket splashed, a distant sound. "Matilda, Polly's dead."(page 13)

I chose this passage because it signaled that the fever had come. It was the start to bad things. This is what got the book going. After Polly's death more and more people started dying. The fever had begun!

  • I feel very bad for Maddie because she lost her best friend, Polly. If I got all ready to play with a friend and then I found out that she was dead I would be very up set. I wish the story told a little more about Polly, but it did not.
    MacLean I.

Why is significant that the servant girl, Polly, who is friendly to Mattie and about the same age, is the first to die of the fever?
  • sophiac August 2011
I agree with what Niamh wrote about that Polly's death had started the fever. i love this page that you picked.

The Fever had started! Polly died from yellow fever. The thousands of fever victims died.
They would all have to wait till the first frost for the yellow fever to go away.

I agree with Maclean. I would be very sad to find out my friend just died. That is the start of the fever!- Brendan Fong

I agree with Niamh that it would be sad if my best friend died. But the only reason I knew it was the fever was because the name of the book. Also, I agree with Maclean. I would be upset if I was having a play date with a dead person! Diego M.

The fever has broke out and Polly is the first victim. I agree with Mac and Highjump. I would be so sad to lose my best friend.
