The First Frost
  • " Frost. This was no dream. "Eliza!! Eliza!!" Eliza stumbled out onto the porch, alarmed and confused. " Look Eliza," I cried. " It's frost! The first frost! The end of the fever!"

This scene is one of the most important scenes in the book. Think of what Mattie felt when she figured out that this was it, the end of the fever! This is my favorite scene in the book

  • This just proved there would be an end to the fever!

  • When Maddie looked out side and she could see frost!!!!! That means that it's the end of the Yellow Fever! Maddie was so happy to see the Frost. Just seeing the Frost made her feel so much better.
  • I loved the first frost because everybody knew that the fever has ended!

When I read the part where Maddie said that it was the first frost and it was the end of the fever I was so happy. I was so happy that Maddie and Eliza had made it without having Nell and the boys dying. Also I was happy that it was the end of the fever.

This was the happiest part in the book. Marie is right, it is one of the most important scenes in the book. I am also happy Maddie adopted Nell, and that the boys and Nell lived!

I agree with everyone. This is the happiest part of the book. The frost meant that the mosquitos had gone and that there would be no more yellow fever.

A happy time, indeed! How do you think this haunting experience influences the way they live their lives moving forward? Mr. K

I agree! This was definitely one of the most exciting parts of the book because Mattie and everyone else in Philadelphia did not have to hide from the fever anymore. The fever is gone from the city! As they move forward in their lives, Mattie and Eliza reopen the coffee shop. Also, Mattie gets to be with her mother again.
