Proud Achilles Page 48

"Greedy, dog-faced thief! thundered Achilles. You recruit me to fight, then rob me of my spoils! You're no better than a brigand! I owe you no service. I swore no oath to Menelaus. Let the Trojans overrun the camp and drive spears through your haughty heart! I'm going home!" Page 48

I think that this is a good quote because Achilles knew that this wasn't right and he wasn't going to stand for it. Later on, Agamemnon offered Achilles many things including Achilles' old handmaiden, Briseis to fight again. I think that this showed Achilles had a lot pride because he turned down all the great things Agamemnon offered.-Shane D.

I totaly agree with you, i mean he had to be brave to fight hector later on. He also needs to manage his anger, because he can get really angry. Like when he drags hector around the walls of troy.

I like this because Achilles is very famous in this battle. The passage shows how Achilles and Menelaus had there up and his downs. Achilles did go to the Trojans and Achilles got his revenge on Menelaus for stealing his spoils. Charlie Foy
  • Achilles was one of my favorite characters because he showed pride, he was a great fighter and was very valiant on the battlefield or in a palace. He showed pride when all the Greeks marched out except himself and his men. pg. 52 Also he showed pride and bravery to argue with Agamemnon. Pg.48 -Sunbun(Sunnym.)

I agree with charliefoy, because those words describe the things I would like to say about this passage.

  • I think this is a interesting quote too. Achilles fought and won but was not rewarded. I think I would be mad too. - Maddie Reed

I know we're not supposed to name call, but I do like the ancient Greek insults. Greedy dog-faced thief!!!
So is his anger righteous or self-interested, or is it possible to be both? Or something else? I read an article that treated Achilles's anger as its own character since it's so pivotal to the plot. Do you ever feel like your anger is it's own character?
  • I totally think it was weird how the Achilles fought but did not get rewarded. I feel it was a pointless fight but i agree with Annie and Charlie about the words in this passage. Charlie Johnson

I think it was interesting how Achilles got mad. I know he expected a reward, but he didn't understand that not all soldiers get rewarded. He had reasons to be mad and reasons to keep his cool. Alex Behney

I dissigree Alex because he was risking his life and his reward is nearly nothing.

I still think he should not have been so mad. Alex Behney
