The Robber Gets Cut (p.146)
  • Brendan June 2011
"You cut me," he said in disbelief. "The wench cut me with the sword." "Get out of my house, before I cut out your heart." I raised the sword and ran at him.

The one with the sword is Matilda. The robber was the one that got cut. I liked this part because it has a lot of action in it and the book does not have intense action like this part. I also liked it because Matilda was defending herself. I was glad she did not get hurt and that he ran away. Brendan Fl

This was my second pick for the passage. I agree that this was the only scene with some intensity in it. I kind of feel bad for Matilda because she worked so hard to protect her grandpa, and he still died. Bavan R.

When I read this part of the book I was thrilled. This part was full of action. After the grandpa shot the gun I knew the robber would leave. I would have been scared to death if I was Matilda, sitting in a corner trying to stay quiet as my house was being robbed.

I thought this part of the book was sad because there were so many people dying of the fever, but others would take advantage of that and rob other peoples homes. They robbed other peoples homes for money, treasures, and jewelry. I can imagine how angry she felt when she attaked the robber and sliced his shoulder.

  • Mattie was being pretty awesome when she said to the robbers,"Get out of my house, before I cut out your heart." But I am very sad about Grandfather died.

I loved this part. I think Mattie was so brave to cut the robber. I don't think I ever could have done that. I started to cry when grandfather died though. I felt scared and amazed at what Mattie did but otherwise I loved it.

I'm sure that anyone can defend themselves, Kathryn. All they need is a little courage. Anyway, although this is a sad scene because Grandfather dies, it is really cool how Mattie was able to defend herself. Take that you filthy swine! He he.

This scene is unfortunate yet a happy part of the book. It was unfortunate because the robbers break into the coffee shop. However, this scene is also happy because Mattie was satisfied with herself when she attacked the robbers with a sword and cut one of the robber's shoulder. This scene was very captivating and action-packed.

  • Like Peter M. said,"This scene is unfortunate yet happy part of the book." I think Maddie was brave to have used a sword. Luckiley she cut the robber. She had lots and lots of courage. The unfortunet part is that the grandpa dies.

Why is language as powerful as the sword in this passage? Do you think Mattie is aware of the risk she is taking by challenging the robber? Mr. K

This part was thrilling yet saddening. Mattie gave the robbers what they deserve, but Grandfather died. This was definetly an action packed part. Karrie N.

I agree with you Brendan that it has a lot of action, and it is a very exciting part in the story. Of course, right after it is very sad. Mr. K, I think that Matilda is not aware of the risk she is taking, but trying to save her grandfather was very important to her, and she found the strength.
