When I clicked on Elective Reading for incoming 6th grade it said you have to do the graphic novel for only one of the books you chose but then I was reading Sophie True's question and you said you have to do the graphic novel for two of your books. Is it two or one? Thanks!
  • cathylincathylin June 2011
    Hi Katherine,

Thanks for the catch. 5th and 6th graders are required to do one graphic novel summary. 7th graders are required to do two graphic novel summaries.

Please hang onto the graphic novel summaries as you'll need to turn them into your advisor during the first week of school.

8th graders have a different format to follow. Please consult this discussion for more information.

So does the book we have to read for the summary have to be a graphic novel? Thanks, Shane D.
  • cathylincathylin June 2011
    Hi Shane,

No, the book you have to read and summarize does not have to be a graphic novel.

As an incoming 6th grader, you're required to read 3 books for elective reading (in other words, read 3 books for fun).

Of the 3 books read, you'll need to create one graphic novel summary which looks like this.

For more instructions on how to create a graphic novel summary, and what it needs to include, read the Elective Reading-6th Grade thread.

Hope this helps, and if you've any questions, be sure to ask.

    Best,
    Ms. Lin

  • Hi Ms Lin,
So are we writing a summary, or are we doing a grapic novel? Or do we have to do a graphic novel, and have as summary to go with it? And I didn't even know about any summarizing. Please explain.
    Best,
    Carmen M
  • cathylincathylin July 2011
    Hi Carmen,

As I explained above to Shane, no the book you have to read and summarize does not have to be a graphic novel.

As an incoming 6th grader, you're required to read 3 books for elective reading (in other words, read 3 books for fun).

Of the 3 books read, you'll need to create one graphic novel summary which looks like this.

Please refer to this discussion and carefully read the instructions at the top. It will tell you what is required for your elective reading.

I have another question. How do you comment on other students passages from their book? What do you click?
  • cathylincathylin July 2011
    Hi Katherine,

That's easy, just find a post that you'd like to comment on and look for a "reply" link to the right of name of the person who posted:

    reply button

Then make your comments and click the Post Comment button below the box you're typing in.

Also, notice that you have a "EDIT" link. If you post your comment and find a typo or error, you can click on that to make some changes.

If the post is a first, standalone post, you won't see the reply option. Just go ahead and type your comments in the box provided and click the Post Comment button directly below it.

    Does this help?

Hi miss Lin. I have another question. For the graphic novel is it OK if I use more than just 8 squares? Could I use the front and back too?
  • elisagonzalez August 2011
    Dear Ms.Lin,
I was wondering how many blogs we have to write on
    our book.
    Thank you,
    Elisa G.
  • cathylincathylin August 2011
    Hi Elisa,

For your required reading title, you need to post ONE memorable passage from the book that you read. Be sure to have the following:

    a) include the passage and page number(s)
    b) discuss why you chose the passage
    c) check that another classmate has not already posted the same passage (no duplicates please)
    d) sign your post with your first name and last initial

Then, you need to comment and reply on TWO other posts from your classmates.

So you need to make a total of THREE posts/discussions.

If you click the title of the book you picked for required reading, there should be a post at the very top titled Directions and Rules that says the same.

    Hope this helps,
    Ms. Lin

    HI Ms. Lin,
How long does the summary have to be? Thank You
    Blake P.
  • cathylincathylin August 2011
    Hi Blake,
The graphic novel summary needs to be 8 panels. Please go to the following discussion 5th-7th Elective Reading Form and read the directions there. It will explain what is required for the summary.
    Best,
    Ms. Lin
