Farmers abandoned Mattie and her grandfather
  • cascapera September 2011
Pg 83 "The farmer brought the whip down with all of his strength, and the wagon lurched forward. I stared, mouth open, as the wagon disappeared into a cloud of dust." "Go back to Philadelphia, " the doctor advised "You can't stay here."
This part of the chapter was sad because Mattie and her grandfather are traveling to find her mother and the farmers just leave them on the side of the road. The grandfather gets sick and Mattie was getting food for him but a swarm of bugs fly on her face and she gets the fever. Then her grandfather brings her to a hospital in Bush Hill.
