Jonas's real father?
  • jp_hatch August 2011
I was wondering, if you assume Rosemary was The Giver's real daughter and not just adopted like all the other children, is it possible that The Giver is also Jonas's biological father?

Rosemary could have been The Giver's real daughter by the Giver donating a sperm to the birthmothers, so whoever got The Giver's sperm would give birth to the future Giver. It could also be possible for The Giver to be Jonas' biological father because they have some similar features like having light colored eyes.

I'm not completely sure if the Giver is Rosemary's biological father or not, but I don't think that the Giver is Jonas' father because the Giver already made the mistake of choosing his own daughter to take the memories and I don't think he would do that again. Also, if Jonas was his son, why would the Giver be with his daughter over his son?

Kimberly, I remember reading that there was a six who also had light eyes. I believe the light eyes define the ability to see beyond. Camille, I agree.

We never are told the identity of Jonas real father, but i believe that the givers blue eyes was a trait that was adopted by Jonas. I believe that the giver is Jonas real father.

Lois Lowry never revealed who Jonas's father really was. It was more of something for us to think about as we read through the story. I thought it was interesting that the "family units" were not related to each other and that they were introduced to each other and immediately had to act as a real family would.

I think that Rosemary wasn't the Giver's real daughter but just adopted because the Giver does have a wife like the rest of the men in the community so why should he have a real daughter and not an adopted daughter like the rest of the community.

I think that Rosemary is the givers daughter because he said he loved her and that he didn't want to give her bad memories, and in one of his favorite memories is Christmas were the family loves each other so i think that they are related because he loves her. I also think that Gabriel is related to Jonas because of the light colored eyes. I think that was a great point that that patrick said about seeing beyond with light eyes, i didn't make that connection until you said that. So i think that all of the 6 are related because it could be a family trait, because not that many people have light eyes.

From what I remember in science.. colored eyes is a recessive trait. I believe the compassion that The Giver had was the same compassion and bravery that both Rosemary and Jonas had. I do believe they were all related. Even little Gabriel who was also able to receive the memories. The fact that Jonas had tried to give Lily a memory and she could not receive it was a clue. The recessive gene was in Gabriel so they were all related. The Giver was able to have peace and with that he was able to join Rosemary. He knew that Jonas and Gabriel would live.
