A Mother Should Always Be Proud-Pg. 311
  • " 'This is your daughter's life, Gulchin,' my mother interrupts, 'There is plenty of time for her to meet somebody and settle down, if she chooses to. She's still so young and her duty, Gulchin, her *Islamic* duty, is to gain an education, to seek knowledge. She has never given you any cause to feel disgraced. You should be proud of her.' "

In the scene in which this quote is found, Amal is enraged by Gulchin, Leila's mother, because she states that Leila has disgraced her. According to Gulchin, Leila was to be married and her education stopped. In response, Leila ran away. She was sick and tired of being pushed around by her over-protective mother. Gulchin however, believes that it is Amal's fault for Leila's rebellion. Just a few nights before, Amal and Yasmeen take Leila out to dinner and her brother, Sam(Hakan) finds them. Leila is forced home and shamed by her family.

I find this quote very interesting because Amal's mother is so very right. Leila should have had freedom to do what she wanted without fear of disgracing her mother. Leila was literally the perfect daughter. Her mother had every right to be proud of her and had no reason to feel disgraced. Leila only ran away because she was sick and tired of being pushed around, suggesting her strength and independence.

All mothers should be proud of their children. Leila never made her mother disgraced in any way. Leila had the right live her own life the way she wanted to. Leila ran away so then maybe her mother would stop controlling her life. AngelinaG

I agree, Lelia's mother should be proud of her even if she didn't want to vaccum or become a housewife. She should let Lelia study and do what she wants with her life and eventually she will get married and have kids, but now she is to young to marry and should focus on her life now.
